Senior Games bring out the competitive spirit in Pittsburgh-area older adults

Age may be just a number, but when it comes to the CitiParks Senior Games, it’s also a reason to celebrate and have fun. In May, older adults throughout Allegheny County gathered for several days of friendly competition and camaraderie as they put their athletic skills to the test in the 2026 Senior Games.

From archery, bocce, and horseshoes to basketball, darts, and track and field, the games offer participants an opportunity to stay active and reconnect with friends while competing for the win. Open to Allegheny County residents ages 60 and older, the Senior Games are part of CitiParks’ Healthy Active Living programming, which encourages older adults to remain physically and socially engaged. The games also demonstrate that the desire to engage in friendly competition doesn’t disappear with age.

This year’s competition kicked off May 19 with archery and continued through May 28 with track and field. Events were held at several Pittsburgh locations, including the Greenfield, South Side and West End Healthy Active Living Centers, and the Schenley Park Oval. Participants competed in six age divisions: 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and 85. For many participants, the games are as much about the people as the competition. The events bring together older adults who share a love of activity and a willingness to challenge themselves.

While the 11 CitiParks Healthy Active Living Centers around Allegheny County provide various activities for older adults throughout the year, the Senior Games offer a chance to step into the role of athlete. The games also challenge some of the stereotypes that surround aging. Watching participants in their 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond encourage one another and push themselves is a reminder that staying active doesn’t have an expiration date.

Family and friends were encouraged to support their athletes at the events. The 2026 games officially concluded with an awards ceremony on August 12 at the Sheraden Center. For the athletes, however, the real reward may have come with the simple act of showing up and saying, “I’m still in the game.”
