While the month of July is typically associated with cookouts and summer vacations, the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging (AAA) once again embraced the spirit of giving by partnering with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and Allegheny Health Network for its second annual Christmas in July volunteer event, held July 25 at LifeSpan’s Mon Valley Senior Community Center in McKeesport.
The event brought together volunteers and older adults for a day centered on community and connection. Volunteers assembled 200 care kits filled with hygiene supplies, puzzles, coloring books, and other comfort items to be distributed to older adults throughout Allegheny County. Combined with an additional 700 kits assembled earlier this summer, the initiative will provide approximately 900 care kits to older adults who may otherwise go without these everyday essentials. The Area Agency on Aging’s Ombudsman Program team and in-home case managers will distribute the care kits to older adults across the county, ensuring they reach individuals who can benefit most from the extra support and encouragement.
The Christmas in July event also highlighted the important role senior community centers play in combating social isolation. LifeSpan’s Mon Valley Senior Community Center serves more than 300 active members ages 60 and older, and offers a welcoming place where older adults can build friendships, stay active, and remain engaged in their communities. From daily lunches and card games to exercise classes, health screenings, group outings, and educational programs, the center provides meaningful opportunities for socialization throughout the year.
Allegheny County operates 42 senior community centers through the Area Agency on Aging, each offering programs and services designed to promote healthy aging and independent living. McKeesport was selected to host this year’s event because of its strong participation and vibrant senior community. Events like Christmas in July serve as an important reminder that small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference—anytime of the year.
