Look for the helpers at Wesley Family Services’ ISOS Program

Mr. Rogers once famously said, “Look for the helpers.” At Wesley Family Services’ In Service of Seniors (ISOS) program, you’ll find those helpers—though there is a growing need for more.

“Our seniors rely on the kindness and dedication of volunteers to stay connected, supported and engaged,” says Director of Volunteer Services Rebecca Maletto-Cornell. “With more helping hands, we can provide companionship, meals and other vital services for our seniors.”

The In Service of Seniors Program provides services with the intent to maximize the independence of older adults in the Pittsburgh area through volunteer-based practical support. Staff work with volunteers, many of whom come from the community, universities, religious congregations of all faiths, and local businesses and professional groups.

All volunteers provide free neighborly services to adults ages 60 and older—and the need for volunteers is high.

“No matter your skills or schedule, there is a way for you to make a difference as a volunteer—whether it’s running errands, doing an activity, or simply spending quality conversation time with a senior,” Rebecca comments.

In fact, program volunteers often share how their experiences with ISOS are just as rewarding for them as they are for seniors they serve. Beyond providing essential support—whether through companionship, running errands, or assisting with daily tasks—volunteers frequently express a deep sense of fulfillment and connection.

“It’s been enlightening in many ways,” shares volunteer Brenda Goggins. “Because even though they think we’re doing them a big service by volunteering, they don’t realize what they give back to us, whether it’s advice, or a lot of times as seniors they are able to give you a sense of wisdom.”

Services provided by ISOS volunteers include:

  • Friendly visiting or friendly phone calls
  • Assistance with grocery shopping
  • Transportation to/from medical appointments, pharmacy, therapy, etc.
  • Assistance reading and sorting mail
  • Home safety assessments and grab bar installations to minimize fall and fire hazards

Most program enrollments begin by talking with an In Service of Seniors staff member and completing an intake assessment. The opportunity to give back fosters a sense of purpose and community, which proves that the impact of volunteering extends far beyond those receiving services. It transforms those who step up to serve.

“If you have time to give,” Rebecca adds, “you have the power to change a life.”
