LGBTQ Aging in PA – A Virtual Town Hall with Secretary Robert Torres

The Department of Aging is committed to ensuring that Pennsylvanians of all sexual orientations and gender identities are able to grow older with access to resources and services that are inclusive, culturally sensitive, and LGBTQ-affirming.

In 2018, we were proud to host the Pennsylvania LGBTQ Aging Summit, the first-ever statewide event in the commonwealth dedicated to exploring the unique issues facing LGBTQ older Pennsylvanians. We left that summit with a renewed energy to improve the aging services landscape for our LGBTQ elders and to empower the provider network to continue working towards greater inclusivity and cultural humility.

In the past year and a half, our department has taken steps to increase our capacity to serve members of the LGBTQ community more effectively. As we develop our State Plan on Aging for 2020-2024, we are identifying strategies to continue to meet the growing needs of the commonwealth’s diverse population of LGBTQ older adults.

We invite you to join us for a Virtual Town Hall on LGBTQ Aging on Wednesday, July 15 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The town hall will be an opportunity for LGBTQ community members, caregivers, service providers, and other stakeholders to hear about the development of the new State Plan on Aging, progress made since the 2018 Summit and the Department of Aging’s other efforts to promote equity for LGBTQ older adults.

This event will also be a forum for LGBTQ Pennsylvanians to share their experiences, concerns, and suggestions for improving the delivery of aging services to the LGBTQ community. We also want to hear from providers about their successes and challenges in completing cultural humility trainings, implementing LGBTQ-related programming, and building relationships with LGBTQ-serving community groups. Feedback gained through this town hall will strengthen the State Plan on Aging and efforts within the aging services network to become more responsive to the needs of the LGBTQ community. We hope you’ll join us.
